Where a benign adrenal tumour or ectopic source of ACTH is present, successful removal of the tumour will cure the patient (Fig. 8.20). This is almost always possible for adrenal adenomas and for some ectopic sources, but adrenal carcinomas are rarely curable by surgery, although the use of the adrenolytic drug ortho-para-diethyl- diphenyl-diethane (o,p-DDD) (see below) may improve the patient's condition.
